Now let’s speak about traditional Ukrainian meals. Our Ukrainian people like tasty food and woman in our country can cook tasty dishes. Everybody who tastes our Ukrainian food says it’s really delicious. What Ukrainian popular dishes do you know? You home task was to prepare describing some of them.

P1. People living in different countries have different eating habits. Their habits depend on the history and culture, geographical position of the country and some other reasons. Every country has its own national dishes. And it is famous for these dishes all over the world. Italy is famous for pizza and macaroni. The most famous English dish is roast beef and Yorkshire pudding. The tradition Ukrainian food includes hot borsch, kasha, pyrohy, varenyky and mlyntsi.

P2. My mother cooks the tastiest borsch. It is the most popular Ukrainian dish. The ingredients of this dish are: meat, beans, sliced potatoes, sliced onions, shredded carrots, shredded cabbage and beet. Sour cream, dill, parsley, salt and pepper add for taste. Sometime she cooks borsch with mushrooms. We also often prepare different salads. They are very useful and my mum says that salads improve our health.

P3. I like kasha very much. I can prepare it myself. I think it’s very tasty. We eat kasha with beefsteak, cutlets or chicken and vegetable salad. My little sister likes pumpkin kasha with sugar and milk. My parents are sure that people must watch what they eat because food affects their health.

P4. As for me I like mlyntsi best of all. I make them of wheat flour, yeast, sugar, salt, milk, butter and eggs. My mother likes mlyntsi with jam and tea. And my father eats them with sour cream and coffee.

P5. My granny bakes pyrohy on Sundays. She takes flour, salt sour cream, yeast. She does them with cabbage, curds, barriers or jam. Sometimes I help her but I never have done them myself.

P6. All the members of our family enjoy eating varenyky. My parents like them with curds or potatoes.

But I and my elder brother like varenyky with cherries best of all. We like also holubtsi very much. My mother has own recipe of cooking them. Tastes differ. She often cooks them on holidays. I’m sure that our Ukrainian cookery is the best and the tastiest in the world.

The towel on the wall…. It’s our ancient custom. There was not a single Ukrainian house, which would not be decorated with towels. A house without a towel was compared with a family without children. A towel symbolized not only aesthetic taste; it was a face of a house and of a hostess. The towels proved that the hostess was tidy and hard-working.

A newly-born child was handed with the towel; guests were met with bread and salt on the towel. A son, a husband, a father were seen off with the towel. While getting married the newly-formed family was standing on a towel too. Bread and salt on an embroidered towel were a symbol of hospitality of the Ukrainian people. To take the towel, to kiss bread symbolized unity, peace, love, understanding among people. This custom has become a good tradition in our country.

Towels were used in different ceremonies and in everyday life: for wiping a face and hands, for drying dishes, for decorating the houses, a face of a house dear people. The ornaments and colours of towels were different in different regions.

Ukraine” by Yevhen Polischuk

Blue sky and yellow field of grain

Is on the flag of my Ukraine.

Its emblem speaks to all the world

With FREEDOM such a lovely word.

Bread – salt will give to a friendly guest.

Ukrainian people without request.

They work and sing the song of praise

To God who’s able from ash to raise.

Ukraine rejoices in the Lord

Reviving from His mighty Word

Forever lives who’s born again.

Long river and pry, my land Ukraine!
